Abstract

This article examines two Late Roman sarcophagi preserved in the Church of San Feliu in Girona, whose carved scenes reveal two profoundly divergent worldviews. One reflects a pagan mindset: a cyclical time, without judgment or redemption, marked by moral ambiguity; the other expresses a Christian understanding of human destiny, where judgment, redemption, and the history of salvation structure the narrative. The fact that both works coexist within a medieval Christian context raises the question of how symbols and doctrines foreign to biblical revelation were incorporated into the life of the Church. This iconographic analysis serves as a starting point for a broader reflection on the persistence of this same dynamic today: the uncritical adoption of forms of religiosity which, under the guise of faith, convey ideologies incompatible with the Gospel.
