Abstract

This article raises the question of the authenticity of the longer ending of Mark (16:9-20). Both external and internal evidence are evaluated to determine whether or not the longer ending is from the autograph. External evidence includes manuscripts, early editions, and patristic citations. The internal evidence includes the analysis of the theological and literary coherence of Mark 16:9-20 in relation to the rest of the gospel and a statistical analysis that compares the use of hapax legomena in Mark in general with the use of these in the disputed portion. It is concluded that the longer ending of Mark was probably not written by the same author of the gospel.
